The creche in the pandemic

The philanthropic arm of the Cathedral is the Anglican Institute which is involved in various charitable activities. The biggest and most important is the running of the crèche in Paraisópolis in Morumbi. This crèche caters for over one thousand children from the ages of zero to five years old and has a staff of 170 people. It is the largest crèche in Brazil.

The pandemic had terrible consequences on the lives of the children and their families. First of all, the crèche was closed and so the parents had nowhere to leave their children during the day. Secondly, in normal times, the children receive food five times a day, three main meals and two snacks which of course ceased to happen with the crèche closed. Thirdly, many of the parents were unable to continue working with disastrous consequences on the financial situation of the families.

Thanks to the generous donations of the members of the Cathedral and the valuable contributions of some firms, the Cathedral managed to supply each family with food rations every fortnight as well as soap, masks and other essential items necessary to fight the virus. Over two hundred volunteers from the Cathedral meet weekly to package and distribute these donations. The Cathedral also supplies 120 meals daily to the most needy.

In past years the children have always received Easter eggs at Easter and, thanks to the kindness of many people, this year was no different. The hardest part was to try to maintain social distancing from the children who wanted to hug the volunteers.

The Cathedral thanks all those people who have helped to make so many lives a bit easier during this difficult time.

É a maior creche no Brasil.

Sermon delivered by Bishop Roger Bird at the November Remembrance Service

In November 1917, World War I was in its 4th year. Things were still very uncertain and I doubt that anyone believed that the war would terminate one year later on the 11th November 1918. Things looked very dark, both for the soldiers fighting on the battle fronts and for the civilians back in England.
