Editorial - Spotlight nº 124 - January & February 2019

Welcome to our first issue of Spotlight for 2019!

Needless to say, our January issue is traditionally late getting to our readers due to the holidays and the heavy load of Christmas  at the  printers.

Every  New Year bring hopes for a better world and it is, with optimism, that I am hoping 2019 will bring us a bit more security, economic  growth and an improvement in social welfare.

Spotlight continues, but continues under pressure to pay its way. We were disappointed that less than half our readers supported our appeal last year, but the half that did, kept us alive.

In this issue I am not requesting  any subscription until I know what the official view  of the British Society  is on the continuation of the magazine in its present form. I would ask however that those who do NOT wish to receive the hard copy let the office know.

Obviously, as Editor, I think Spotlight is important. For any organization to survive you have to communicate with your clients. If you are offering welfare and performing other activities you have to let your members know what is on offer, and let the community know what you are doing. What better  source than Spotlight. Spotlight is the only written communication with the community and acts as the only historical register of activities in our community. Looking back at our last twenty years, we have a full history of all the activities which have taken place. I understand the position, the cost to produce Spotlight, and today  social media exists. True. I would argue, however,  that  the differential between what is received as contributions and the costs, translates into a very reasonable annual advertising expense. Social media is here to stay but does not stay on the dinner table.

You will see our Calendar for this issue is empty... what happened? Let us know.

On behalf of all of us at Spotlight and the British Society I wish our readers and contributors a healthy, peaceful and prosperous 2019!

Derrick Marcus
