A new Spotlight for new times

Spotlight No. 128, released in October 2019, marked the end of an era. It was the last issue under the responsibility of Derrick Marcus, the editor who was in charge of the magazine for almost 20 years and who retired from this position at the end of last year. It is most certainly thanks to Derrick that Spotlight continued being published in recent decades and has remained the main reference for the British community in São Paulo. The origin of this publication dates back to at least the 40s, when the "Weekly Community Bulletin" was published by the British & Commonwealth Community Council of São Paulo, former name of the British Society São Paulo. The photo below is the first page of this bulletin, published during World War II, on June 30, 1942.

Although much has changed over the years - the bulletin was named Spotlight, we adopted the magazine format, changed the periodicity of issues, and incorporated new types of content - the spirit of this publication has remained the same. And it was Derrick who was greatly responsible for keeping this tradition alive as we entered the 21st century.

Another thing that has not changed is the magazine's objective: to be a reference communication vehicle for the British community in São Paulo, bringing relevant information about their organisations, their events, their achievements. And it is with all this history in mind that we set ourselves the important task of giving continuity to Spotlight after the departure of our Editor.

It is often said that no one is irreplaceable, but Derrick's succession surely gave us a lot of work. After much thought we, at the British Society São Paulo, came to the conclusion that the best alternative was to compose an Editorial Council with the main organisations of the British community. Nothing better than to count on everyone's collaboration in order to remain a reference for the community in São Paulo.

But we also believe that it was the right time to expand our horizons. If in their origins these organisations were founded and frequented by British people, over the decades they have all been "Brazilianized" while incorporating new members and frequenters, mostly with no connection to the UK or the Commonwealth.

The same has happened with the families that make up the British community. In the 1940s this group was still composed of many immigrants who had just arrived in our city, but today almost all the families are already in their second or third generation and are as Brazilian as they are British.

For these reasons, we believe that Spotlight should also communicate with non-British people who are involved (or who may want to be involved) with the community and its organisations. And the magazine will serve as a tool to disseminate to São Paulo’s society all the excellent work that the British have been doing for over 100 years, and continue doing to this day.

The new Spotlight is bilingual, has new sections and plenty of space to share our news and achievements. It also intends to foster content and debate on topics of wider interest and that are in some way linked to the causes advocated by the organisations that make up our Editorial Council: the elderly, education, sports and welfare, spirituality and health.

This issue represents a first step in this new direction, but we know that there is still a lot to be done to make Spotlight better and better. We hope we can count on your support on this enterprise!

Um novo Spotlight para os novos tempos

O Spotlight nº 128, lançado em outubro de 2019, marcou o fim de uma era. Foi a última edição sob responsabilidade de Derrick Marcus, o Editor que ficou a cargo da revista por quase 20 anos e que se aposentou desta função ao final do ano passado. Seguramente podemos afirmar que é graças ao Derrick que o Spotlight continuou sendo publicado nas últimas décadas e se manteve como a principal referência para a comunidade britânica de São Paulo. A origem desta revista remonta, pelo menos, à década de 40, quando o “Weekly Community Bulletin” era publicado pelo British & Commonwealth Community Council paulistano, antigo nome da British Society São Paulo. A foto abaixo é a primeira página desse boletim, publicado em plena Segunda Guerra Mundial, no dia 30 de junho de 1942.

Embora muito tenha mudado ao longo dos anos – o boletim ganhou o nome Spotlight, adotamos o formato de revista, mudamos a periodicidade das edições, incorporamos novos tipos de conteúdo –, o espírito da publicação se manteve o mesmo. E Derrick foi o grande responsável por manter esta tradição viva ao entrarmos no século XXI.

Outra coisa que não mudou foi o objetivo da revista: ser um veículo de comunicação referência para a comunidade britânica em São Paulo, trazendo informações relevantes sobre suas organizações, seus eventos, suas conquistas. E é com toda essa história em mente que nos propusemos à importante tarefa de dar continuidade ao Spotlight após a saída do nosso Editor.

Costuma-se dizer que ninguém é insubstituível, mas a sucessão do Derrick nos deu bastante trabalho. Após muito pensar, nós, da British Society São Paulo, chegamos à conclusão de que a melhor alternativa era compor um Conselho Editorial com as principais organizações da comunidade britânica. Nada melhor que contar com a colaboração de todos para nos mantermos como referência da comunidade em São Paulo.

Mas também acreditamos que o momento era propício para expandir nossos horizontes. Se em suas origens estas organizações foram fundadas e frequentadas por britânicos, ao longo das décadas todas foram se “abrasileirando” e incorporando novos membros e frequentadores, em sua maioria sem nenhuma ligação com o Reino Unido ou com o “Commonwealth”.

O mesmo ocorreu com as famílias que compõem a comunidade britânica. Nos anos 40 este grupo ainda era composto por muitos imigrantes recém chegados a nossa cidade mas, atualmente, quase todas as famílias já estão em sua segunda ou terceira geração e são tão brasileiras quanto britânicas.

Por estes motivos, acreditamos que o Spotlight deve se comunicar também com os não-britânicos que estão envolvidos (ou que podem querer se envolver) com a comunidade e suas organizações. E a revista servirá como uma ferramenta para divulgar à sociedade paulistana todo o excelente trabalho que os britânicos vêm fazendo por São Paulo há mais de 100 anos, e que continuam fazendo até os dias de hoje.

O novo Spotlight é bilíngue, tem novas seções e bastante espaço para compartilhar nossas novidades e conquistas. E também pretende fomentar conteúdos e debate sobre temas de interesse mais amplo e que estejam ligados, de alguma forma, às causas defendidas pelas organizações que compõem nosso Conselho Editorial: terceira idade, educação, esportes e bem-estar, espiritualidade e saúde.

Esta edição representa um primeiro passo nessa nova direção, mas sabemos que ainda há muito a se fazer para que o Spotlight seja cada vez melhor. Esperamos contar com o seu apoio nessa jornada!
