Graduates reflect on their schooling

The DP 2 students, which are the studentsin the last year of school at St. Francis College, graduated back in June of this year. Circumstances of their final months of study and graduation were indeed unusual given the world pandemic, yet they were able to conclude it successfully. Many of these graduate students had been at the College for years, and they shared their experiences and thoughts on who St. Francis helped them to become in the testimonials below. We thought it would be nice to share these young scholars testimonials with our broader community.
José Alvaro
“I believe that what stands out about St. Francis is the incredible effort they make to build on students’ personality. They ensure discipline through strict rules and policies, and also build on students’ character with help from the IB learner profile. The wide variety of extracurricular activities that the school offers, which range from helping public schools to participating in a chess club, also helps in this aspect, allowing students to learn about themselves and their surroundings. St. Francis engages with its students’ character by having them pursue capstone projects at ages 11 and 15 through 18, which again lead each student to interact with and discover more about their community and themselves. With these initiatives, I was able to visit public school Godofredo Furtado, where I could teach math to students in need, and I was also encouraged to learn Italian and develop a project to incentivise other students to come to school by bicycle. My experience at St. Francis was of utmost importance to the building of my character.”

“St. Francis College has established both moral and academic values to my personal growth. The international background which I have been exposed to in my 16 years at this school have allowed me to have a unique internship opportunity and create a network of friends from all around the globe. Being in contact with a diverse group of people from different cultures opened my eyes to the community outside of St. Francis as well. Despite having benefited greatly from these factors, pursuing the rigorous IB curriculum did challenge my limits and generated stress. It has, however, pushed me to develop independence and curiosity towards knowledge. Additionally, the IB, and through it St. Francis, also allowed me to be in contact with different communities in Brazil and internationally, helping my formation as a more balanced person. Above all, the constructive environment built by staff and students in the school propelled me to achieve my highest potential. I always felt comfortable and supported which made my experience all the most incredible and the IB quite enduring.”

“I am an international student who has just graduated in the class of 2020 at St. Francis College. St. Francis has made a very big difference in my life. Coming from Europe, it was a challenge to adapt to the Brazilian culture, however this change was made much easier due to the school. St. Francis is not only a school, it is a community, a big family, and always welcomes new students with open arms. I would not have been who I am today without all the support the school has given me. With the help of excellent teachers, advisors, and staff, I have become what I believe to be the best [version] of myself. Due to the innumerable opportunities the school has given me, I was not only able to develop my study skills but also my social skills. I discovered my passions. At this point, even during the pandemic, I feel like I am ready for the future. I believe that St. Francis did a tremendous job in preparing me for university and for life. It will be difficult to leave the St. Francis community after 7 years, but I feel more than ready for new challenges in life.”

“My time at St. Francis has definitely changed who I am. It’s hard to look back at when I wasn’t a student at the school, more than 15 years ago. St. Francis has been my home for almost all my life. Other than receiving exceptional education, I also learned core values which will stick with me for life. St. Francis taught me a lot about respect. Not only for the teachers and staff, but also for other students. We learned that we must always treat others as our equals, despite their backgrounds. I believe this was one of my greatest lessons at St. Francis. I also learned a lot about how I can use my voice for change. The school offered all students the opportunity to become leaders. I decided to take those opportunities to the fullest, as I ran for both house captain and student council vice president. With those opportunities, I learned a lot about responsibility and leadership. They helped me become the leader I am today, and for that I will be forever grateful.”
Rafaela Reppucci
“I have been part of the St. Francis community ever since I was enrolled in 2004. Over these 16 years, I overcame many milestones, from learning how to read and write at the age of 5, to learning calculus, thermal physics, and how to assemble my very first art exhibition at [the age of] 18. More than that, I have built my identity and made lifelong friends during these many years at St. Francis. I have also discovered my skills and difficulties, and experienced what it feels to be part of such a welcoming and diverse community. Looking back, these 16 years have been transformative in endless ways and I can only be grateful for all that I have learned. St. Francis has been a pillar to my personal and academic growth and I definitely would not be where I am today had it not been for this amazing community of teachers, friends, and parents. I know that I am ready for the next chapter of my life, even amidst such challenging times, because I was encouraged to overcome challenges ever since I stepped into school.”

“My journey at St. Francis started when I was only 8 years old, when I was a child with practically zero English fluency and a serious problem of shyness. I was coming from a Brazilian school with a Brazilian curriculum, having only Brazilian friends, and entering an environment more diverse than I could ever imagine existed in my own neighbourhood. I was exposed, all at once, to an all-English environment, with friends from all around the world, with different cultures, customs, values, and priorities. Little did I know that this environment would change my life completely and shape me into who I am today. During my almost 10 years in St. Francis, I developed skills that we, in the IB curriculum, would call the Learner Profile. I became a great communicator and discovered my passion for languages and communications...verbal, artistic, visual, that ended up being exactly what I chose to continue focusing on in my further education. The school, as a whole, provided the ideal environment for me to freely explore a variety of different potential areas of interest, from arts and drama to geography and humanities, as well as an almost infinite list of extra curricular activities to choose from. Such an environment has built me into a very open-minded individual and someone who truly values and sees the richness in divergence – which was my top priority when choosing where to go to university. I have come to truly admire individuality and the difference in each of us because of the international mindset that St. Francis provides and encourages daily. Not to mention that with such a challenging curriculum as the IB, and the exceptional teachers I have had the privilege to have, I am knowledgeable and a risk-taker who is ready for this next phase of life that I am about to begin. St. Francis has opened many doors for me and for my future, destroying any boundaries I could encounter and making me a citizen of the world who knows no limits to where I can go with life. I am extremely grateful to have been educated in such a privileged and rich environment and I will take every lesson, every experience, the good and the bad, with me for life.”

Os alunos do DP 2, que são os alunos cursando o último ano escolar no St. Francis College formaram-se em junho deste ano. As circunstâncias dos seus últimos meses de estudo e sua formatura foram deveras incomuns devido à pandemia mundial, mas eles conseguiram concluí-los com sucesso. Muitos destes formandos estiveram vários anos no Colégio e compartilharam as suas experiências e seus pensamentos nos testemunhos abaixo sobre como o St. Francis os ajudou a se tornar o que são hoje. Achamos que seria bom compartilhar os depoimentos destes jovens estudantes com a nossa comunidade…

“Acredito que o que se destaca no St. Francis é o incrível esforço que fazempara construir a personalidade dos estudantes. A disciplina é assegurada através de regras e políticas rigorosas, e também se constrói o caráter dos estudantes coma ajuda do perfil de aluno do IB (“International Baccalaureate”). A grande variedade de atividades extracurriculares que a escola oferece, que vão desde ajudar escolas públicas a participar de um clube de xadrez, também ajuda neste aspecto, permitindo aos estudantes aprenderem sobre si próprios e o seu entorno. O St. Francis se envolve com o caráter dos seus alunos, fazendo-os desenvolver projetos de conclusão de curso aos 11 anos e dos 15 aos 18, o que leva cada aluno a interagir e a descobrir mais sobre a sua comunidade e sobre si próprio. Com estas iniciativas, pude visitar a escola pública Godofredo Furtado, onde pude ensinar matemática a estudantes necessitados, e também fui encorajado a aprender italiano e a desenvolver um projeto para incentivar outros estudantes a virem à escola de bicicleta. A minha experiência no St. Francis foi da maior importância para a construção do meu caráter”.

“O St. Francis estabeleceu valores morais e acadêmicos para o meu crescimento pessoal. A experiência internacional a que fui exposto nos meus 16 anos nesta escola permitiu-me ter uma oportunidade única e criar uma rede de amigos de todo o mundo. Estar em contato com um grupo diversificado de pessoas de diferentes culturas abriu-me também os olhos para a comunidade fora do St. Francis. Apesar de ter sido beneficiado muito com estes fatores, seguir o rigoroso currículo IB desafiou os meus limites e gerou stress. No entanto, levou-me a desenvolver independência e curiosidade em relação ao conhecimento. Além disso, o IB, e através dele o St. Francis, também me permitiu estar em contato comdiferentes comunidades no Brasil e no exterior, ajudando aminha formação como uma pessoa mais equilibrada. Acima de tudo, o ambiente construtivo gerado pela equipe e pelos estudantes da escola impulsionou-me a atingir o meu potencial mais elevado, sempre me sentindo confortável e apoiado, o que fez com que a minha experiência fosse a mais incrível e o BI bastante duradouro”.

“Sou uma estudante internacional que acaba de se formar na turma de 2020 no St. Francis College. O St. Francis fez uma diferença muito grande na minha vida – vinda da Europa, foi um desafio adaptar-me à cultura brasileira. No entanto, esta mudança foi muito facilitada devido à escola. O St. Francis não é apenas uma escola, é uma comunidade, uma grande família, e acolhe sempre os novos alunos de braços abertos. Eu não seria quem sou hoje sem todo o apoio que a escola me tem dado. Com a ajuda de excelentes professores e conselheiros, tornei-me aquilo que acredito ser a minha melhor versão. Devido às inúmeras oportunidades que a escola me deu, não só me foi possível desenvolver as minhas capacidades de estudo, mas também as minhas capacidades sociais e descobrir as minhas paixões. Neste momento, mesmo durante a pandemia, sinto-me como se estivesse pronta para o futuro. Creio que o St. Francis fez um trabalho tremendo na minha preparação para a universidade e para a vida. Será difícil deixar a comunidade do St. Francis após 7 anos, mas sinto-me mais do que pronta para novos desafios na vida”.

“O meu tempo no St. Francis mudou definitivamente quem eu sou. É difícil olhar para trás, há mais de 15 anos, quando eu não era estudante da escola. O St. Francis tem sido a minha casa durante quase toda a minha vida. Muito além de receber uma educação excepcional, também aprendi valores fundamentais que permanecerão comigo para toda a vida. O St. Francis ensinou-me muito sobre respeito. Não só para com os professores e funcionários, mas também para com os outros estudantes. Aprendemos que devemos sempre tratar os outros como nossos iguais, independentemente de seus históricos de vida. Creio que esta foi uma das minhas maiores lições no St. Francis. Também aprendi muito sobre como posso usar a minha voz para a gerar mudança. A escola ofereceu a todos os estudantes a oportunidade de se tornarem líderes. Decidi aproveitar ao máximo essas oportunidades, haja vista que concorri tanto para monitor escolar como para vice-presidente do conselho estudantil. Com essas oportunidades, aprendi muito sobre responsabilidade e liderança. Ajudaram-me a tornarme o líder que sou hoje, e por isso ficarei eternamente grato”.

“Faço parte da comunidade do St. Francis desde que fui matriculada em 2004. Ao longo destes 16 anos alcancei muitas metas, desde aprender a ler e escrever aos 5 anos de idade, até aprender cálculo, física térmica e como montar a minha primeira exposição de arte aos 18 anos. Mais do que isso, construí a minha identidade e fiz amigos para toda a vida durante estesmuitos anos no St. Francis. Também descobri as minhas capacidades e dificuldades e experimentei o que é fazer parte de uma comunidade tão acolhedora e diversificada. Em retrospectiva, estes 16 anos têm sido transformadores de infinitas maneiras e só posso estar grata por tudo o que aprendi. O St. Francis tem sido o pilar do meu crescimento pessoal e acadêmico e eu definitivamente não estaria onde estou hoje se não fosse por esta maravilhosa comunidade de professores, amigos e pais. Sei que estou pronta para o próximo capítulo da minha vida,mesmo nomeio de tempos tão difíceis, porque fui encorajada a superar desafios desde que entrei na escola”.

“A minha jornada no St. Francis começou aos 8 anos de idade, quando era uma criança com praticamente zero de fluência em inglês e um grave problema de timidez. Eu vinha de uma escola brasileira com um currículo brasileiro, tendo apenas amigos brasileiros, e entrava num ambiente mais diversificado do que alguma vez poderia imaginar que existisse no meu próprio bairro. Estava exposta, de uma só vez, a um ambiente totalmente inglês, com amigos de todo o mundo, com culturas, costumes, valores e prioridades diferentes. Mal sabia eu que este ambiente iria mudar completamente a minha vida e moldar-me no que sou hoje. Durante os meus quase 10 anos no St. Francis, desenvolvi competências que nós, no currículo do IB, chamaríamos o Perfil do Aluno. Tornei-me uma grande comunicadora e descobri a minha paixão por línguas e comunicações... verbais, artísticas, visuais, que acabarampor ser exatamente aquilo em que escolhi continuar a concentrar-me na minha formação. A escola, como um todo, proporcionou-me o ambiente ideal para explorar livremente uma variedade de diferentes áreas de interesse, desde artes e teatro a geografia e humanidades, bem como uma lista quase infinita de Atividades Extracurriculares. Tal ambiente fez de mim um indivíduo com uma mente muito aberta e alguém que verdadeiramente valoriza e vê a riqueza na divergência - o que foi a minha principal prioridade ao escolher aonde ir para a Universidade. Passei a admirar verdadeiramente a individualidade e a diferença em cada um de nós devido à mentalidade internacional que o St. Francis proporciona e encoraja diariamente. Para não mencionar que com um currículo tão desafiante como o IB e os professores excepcionais que tive o privilégio de ter, sou uma pessoa bem informada e ousada que está pronta para a próxima fase da vida prestes a se iniciar. O St. Francis abriu muitas portas para mim e para o meu futuro, destruindo quaisquer fronteiras que pudesse encontrar e fazendo de mim uma cidadã do mundo que não conhece limites para onde posso ir com a vida. Sou extremamente grata por ter sido educada num ambiente tão privilegiado e rico e levarei comigo todas as lições, todas as experiências, as boas e as ruins, para a vida”.
