In this section we want to bring you a mini-bio of people who are important to the British & Commonwealth community in São Paulo. And for this issue we chose Colin Pritchard, who is the face of all things Scottish in Brazil.
Colin is the most recognised face of all things Scottish in Brazil and he has truly been the unofficial ambassador of Scottish culture in São Paulo. No one gives more time, effort, dedication and passion to promoting Scotland in São Paulo and in the region than Colin.
Colin carries on this tradition of promoting Scotland and Scottish culture here in Brazil that not only starts with the formation of the St. Andrew Society in 1924 but goes much further back than this.
It is Colin’s exceptional dedication and persistence that enables Scottish culture to continue to be visible here in Sao Paulo, Brazil and the region.
Colin was born in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil at the beginning of the 2nd World War. His father, Herbert Ronald Pritchard, was an Engineer with Babcock & Wilcox based in Rio. After the war Colin and the family were then able to return to Scotland.
Colin came back to Brazil with Bank of London and South America (Lloyds Bank Plc.) having first worked in London then Portugal and had a 31-year career with the bank. Over these many years in Brazil, Colin has had many different roles promoting Scottish culture in a variety of ways.
In 1996 Colin was asked by United Distillers Plc (Diageo Plc.) Brazil to become their Brand Ambassador for Johnnie Walker. Colin promoted and carried out Whisky tastings in Brazil, Paraguay & Uruguay for more than 12 years. In this role Colin always enthusiastically not only promoted the whisky but also left a great lasting impression with the public about Scotland.
From 2001 to 2009 Colin was involved with SLPB - Scottish Link Pipe Band as Drum Major. During this period Colin put Scottish culture in Sao Paulo on the map as far as the region was concerned and gained recognition from Scotland. And in August 2005 the band won 1st place at the South America Pipe Band gatherings and took part in the World Piping Competition that was held in Glasgow.
In 2015 he was invited to participate in the 2015 Anzac Centenary in Kanchanaburi, Thailand.
Beyond these many achievements, Colin’s involvement with the St. Andrew Society should be praised.
Founded in 1924, the St. Andrew Society is a non-profit organization made up of Scots, people of Scottish descent and others of all nationalities who are friends of Scotland. The St. Andrew Society promotes Scottish heritage and customs in Brazil through social, cultural, sporting and educational events and tries to create funds to donate to local charities.
Colin joined the St. Andrew Society in 1976, was their Treasurer from 1979 to 1986 and President in 2001 & 2002. Currently he is still an active Committee Member.
He has led the main events for more than 15 years as Master of Ceremonies and is currently coaching new people to take over this role, a very important and visible one that Colin has excelled at.
His history with the St. Andrew Society Pipes and Drums deserves to be highlighted, since he is their Leader and Drum Major. The band, founded by Colin in March 2009, represents the Society at national and international events, promoting Scottish traditional music and dances. Over its 11-year history, the band has collected numerous accolades and aside from Society events has participated in prestigious cultural, educational and sporting events such as:
International Days at various schools in São Paulo including St Paul’s and St. Nicholas
Golf Days – Interstate and Charity matches – São Fernando Golf Club
June 2011 visit of Edinburgh University Rugby Club, that played the Brazilian national rugby team and other select teams during a local tour here in Brazil and was featured on BBC Scotland
The St. Andrew Society Pipes and Drums was the first Brazilian pipe band to play at the Berlin Tattoo in 2016

As Leader and Drum Major of the band, he holds a band practice every Sunday morning that introduces bagpipes and Scottish music to new members and enables the band to improve their skills
Passing on a tradition that dates back to the Society's founding members, Colin continues to prepare and serve the traditional Athol Brose. His skillful mixing, preparation and organisation of the traditional ceremony ensures that all St Andrew Society guests, including many who had never tasted the drink, get an authentic experience of one of Scotland's oldest traditions.
He is also the Coordinator of the St Andrew Society Dance Club, in which he leads the monthly meetings of a group of Scottish country dancing enthusiasts, from all ages and nationalities. This dance practice takes place as the British Brazilian Centre in São Paulo. His knowledge of the various tunes and reels ensure that the tradition of the ceilidh is not only enjoyed by the local Scottish diaspora but also by newcomers who are mostly Brazilian. An impact of these dance classes is that we now have more Brazilian’s joining the society, taking an interest in Scottish & British culture and visiting the UK.
Recently the band is carrying out online events due to the present COVID 19 situation, but they should be back to action as soon as the situation is under control and Colin should be leading these gatherings as usual.

Colin é o rosto mais reconhecido de tudo que se refere à Escócia no Brasil e realmente é o embaixador não oficial da cultura escocesa em São Paulo. Ninguém dedica mais tempo, esforço, dedicação e paixão do que ele à promoção da Escócia na nossa região.
Ele mantém essa tradição de promover a Escócia e a cultura escocesa aqui no Brasil, que teve seu início não apenas com a formação da St. Andrew Society em 1924, mas também vai muito além disso.
É sua excepcional dedicação e persistência que permitem que a cultura escocesa continue sendo visível aqui em São Paulo, no Brasil e na região.

Além dessas muitas realizações, o envolvimento de Colin com a St. Andrew Society deve ser elogiado.

Colin ingressou na St. Andrew Society em 1976, foi seu tesoureiro de 1979 a 1986 e presidente em 2001 e 2002. Atualmente ainda é um membro ativo do Comitê.
Ele lidera os principais eventos da organização há mais de 15 anos como Mestre de Cerimônias e atualmente está treinando outras pessoas para assumirem esse papel de extrema importância e com alta visibilidade.
Sua história com a St. Andrew Society Pipes and Drums merece destaque, já que ele é o líder e mestre de bateria da banda. Fundada por Colin em março de 2009, a SASPD representa a St. Andrew em eventos nacionais e internacionais, promovendo músicas e danças escocesas tradicionais. Ao longo de seus 11 anos de história, a banda recebeu inúmeros elogios e, além dos eventos da Sociedade, participou de prestigiados eventos culturais, educacionais e esportivos, como:

Dias de Golfe - Partidas Interestaduais e de Caridade - São Fernando Golf Club
A visita do Edinburgh University Rugby Club em junho de 2011, quando o time de Edimburgo jogou contra a seleção brasileira de rugby durante uma turnê local aqui no Brasil em partida televisionada pela BBC da Escócia.
A St. Andrew Society Pipes and Drums foi a primeira banda brasileira de tubos a tocar no Berlin Tattoo em 2016

Participou e ganhou prêmios nos encontros da South America Pipe Band.
Como líder e mestre de bateria da banda, Colin realiza um ensaio todos os domingos de manhã, apresentando as gaitas de fole e a música escocesa aos novos membros, além de conduzir as práticas que melhoram as habilidades da banda.
Transmitindo uma tradição que remonta aos membros fundadores da Sociedade, Colin continua a preparar e servir o tradicional Athol Brose. Sua habilidade para fazer o drink, bem como para preparar e organizar a cerimônia tradicional garante que todos os convidados da St. Andrew Sociwety, incluindo muitos que nunca provaram a bebida, tenham uma experiência autêntica de uma das tradições mais antigas da Escócia.
Ele também é o coordenador do St Andrew Society Dance Club, na qual lidera as reuniões mensais de um grupo de entusiastas da dança escocesa, de todas as idades e nacionalidades. Essa prática de dança ocorre no Centro Brasileiro Britânico em São Paulo. Seu conhecimento das várias músicas e danças de roda garante que a tradição do ceilidh seja apreciada não apenas pela comunidade escocesa local, mas também por aventureiros brasileiros que frequentam as reuniões. Um dos resultados dessas aulas de dança é que agora temos mais brasileiros se juntando à St. Andrew Society, interessando-se pela cultura escocesa e britânica e visitando o Reino Unido.
Atualmente a banda está realizando eventos on-line devido à situação atual do COVID 19, mas eles devem voltar à ação assim que a situação estiver sob controle. Como de costume, Colin deve liderar essas novas reuniões.
